1989/90 Model Volkswagen Passat and 1989/90 Model Corrado Vehicles Replace Heat Exchanger

Dear Volkswagen Dealer:

This is to inform you of the initiation of a voluntary safety recall campaign for 1989/90 model Volkswagen Passat and 1989/90 4-cylinder Corrado
vehicles. This recall pertains to the replacement of the heat exchanger.

Defect Description

It is possible that if an engine overheats and the vehicle continues to be operated in that condition, the heat exchanger could leak.

Vehicle Identification Number Range

The vehicles affected are within the following vehicle identification number ranges:

Please note that the above VINs represent the lowest and highest serial numbers of affected vehicles. Use of the V-Crest campaign inquiry system will
allow you to determine whether or not a particular vehicle, within the above VIN ranges, requires the corrective work.

NOTE Volkswagen will not reimburse under this recall action any duplicate recall repair work or a repair outside the VIN range.

Remedial Action

Replace the heat exchanger in each affected vehicle with a new unit.

Important: Please Provide A Copy To All Personnel With Recall-Related Responsibilities!

Owner Notification Mailing

Volkswagen will mail first class notification letters to all known owners of affected vehicles beginning on or about September 12,1996. A copy of the
applicable owner letter is included in this circular.

Vehicle Allocation

By separate mail and prior to owner notification, we will furnish you a computer list containing information for vehicles retailed by your dealership.

Work Procedure

All affected vehicles are to be repaired in accordance with the details outlined in the enclosed Work Procedure Booklet. Please ensure that technicians
follow the steps and sequences outlined in this procedure. Additionally, we will provide you, prior to the onset of this recall, a video describing the most
important and delicate steps of the Corrado work procedure. Also ensure that technicians view the instructional video prior to performing this recall work
on a Corrado vehicle for the first time.
