A/T - Revised Procedure for Checking ATF Level

The Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) level in the transmission will change with the temperature of the fluid.
The following procedure is a revision to the Passat Repair Manual for checking ATF level.
This procedure is to be employed when the vehicle is cold. If the car has been driven, allow at least one

hour to cool down before proceeding.
ATF Level, Checking

Vehicle on level surface.

Parking brake applied.
^
Selector lever at "P" position.
^
Without starting engine, the ATF level must reach the 20~C (68~F) mark "A" on the dipstick when cold.

Start engine.
^
Raise RPM (not exceed 2000 RPM) until-fan cycles the first time
^
Return to idle to minimize foaming of ATF.
^
With foot brake applied, put vehicle in any gear for 2-3 seconds and return to park "P" immediately.

After 2nd fan cycle check level. Use a clean lint free cloth to wipe dipstick.

Check level of ATF on dipstick. Add or suction out fluid until level is between 36-40 mm from the tip of the dipstick.
Additional fan cycles will not affect this procedure as long as vehicle remains at idle speed.
DO NOT overfill transmission. Too much ATF will cause the transmission to malfunction. Always remove fluid if checking indicates transmission is
overfilled.
