Engine Control Module (ECM), Replacing

Work procedure

First, check control module identification of the previous Engine Control Module (ECM) as follows:

Connect diagnostic tester. See: Testing and Inspection/Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes/Scan Tool Connecting/Diagnostic Tester,
Connecting

-

Switch ignition on.

-

Under address word 33, select "Diagnostic mode 9: Vehicle information".

-

Select the vehicle information "Test-ID 04: Calibration Identification".
Control module identification will be displayed, e.g.: 3B0907551CG0001

-

End diagnosis and switch ignition off.

-

Remove securing screws at cover of protective housing for control modules -arrows- and remove cover.

-

Using a screwdriver, carefully pry off retaining bracket (arrow).

-

Then disengage connector from control module and disconnect.

-

Remove old control module and insert new one.

-

Check whether the new control module identification matches the old control module identification.

NOTE:
-

To achieve optimal anti-theft protection for the vehicle, an anti-theft immobilizer is installed. The anti-theft immobilizer is a system for
enabling and locking the Engine Control Module (ECM).

-

So that this system cannot be circumvented, it is necessary to perform adaptation of the anti-theft immobilizer using the Vehicle Diagnostic and
Information System VAS 5052 in the On Board Diagnostic (OBD) function.

The great availability of equipment options makes adaptation of the Engine Control Module (ECM) necessary (e.g. cruise control system).
This "writing" function is not possible with the generic scan tool.

If Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220- was replaced:
