Selector Lever Mechanism

Overview

Selector lever mechanism, servicing 

WARNING!:  Before working on engine when it is running, move selector lever into position "P" and apply parking brake. 

Selector lever mechanism, checking 

In selector lever positions "2", "3", "4", "D" and "R", do not operate starter motor.
On RHD vehicles, the starter motor may only be operated in selector lever positions "P" and "N", providing the selector lever handle lock button is not
pressed.
If selector lever position "N" is selected at speeds greater than 5 km/in, the selector lever lock solenoid must not engage and block the selector lever.
Selector lever can be shifted in a driving gear.
If selector lever position "N" is selected at speeds less than 5 km/in (almost stationary), the selector lever lock solenoid should engage after approx.
1 second.Selector lever can only be shifted out of position "N" once foot brake has been depressed.

Selector lever in "P" position and ignition switched on:

Brake pedal not depressed:
Selector lever is locked and cannot be shifted out of position "P" with button pressed. Selector lever lock solenoid blocks selector lever.

Brake pedal depressed:
Selector lever lock solenoid releases selector lever. It is possible to shift into a driving gear. Shift selector lever slowly from "P" to "2" and, whilst
doing this, check whether the display in the instrument cluster shows the correct selector lever position.

Selector lever in "N" position and ignition switched on:

Brake pedal not depressed:
Selector lever is locked and cannot be shifted out of "N" position with button pressed. Selector lever lock solenoid blocks selector lever.

Brake pedal depressed:
Solenoid for selector lever lock releases selector lever. It is possible to shift into a driving gear.

Selector lever in "D" position, ignition and lights switched on: 

-

Shift selector lever into Tiptronic gate.
The illumination of the "D" symbol in the selector lever display should go out, and the "+" and "-" symbols should light up.
The selector lever position display in the instrument cluster must change from "PRND432" to "54321" when the selector lever is moved into the
Tiptronic gate.

Selector lever position indicator 

If all segments of the selector lever position indicator are lit, the transmission is in emergency running mode.

Check selector lever cable and adjust if necessary.

Check ignition key withdrawal lock.

Removing and Installing

Obtain radio code on vehicles with coded radio.

-

Shift selector lever into "P" position.

-

With the ignition switched off disconnect the battery Ground strap.

-

Remove selector lever handle.

-

Remove center console and extension.

-

Remove cover.

-

Unplug electrical connectors.

-

Unclip locking cable from locking lever and unclip securing spring on mounting bracket. To do this, lift securing spring slightly.

-

Raise vehicle.

-

If necessary, remove front exhaust system with catalyst.
