Lifter/Valve Adjuster Diagram for Passat GLS Wagon V6 (2001)
Lifter / Lash Adjuster: Testing and Inspection
Special tools and equipment
-
Feeler gauge
-
Wood or plastic wedge
Note:
-
Replace malfunctioning lifter complete (cannot be adjusted or repaired).
-
Irregular valve noises when starting engine are normal.
Test sequence
-
Start engine and run until radiator fan has switched on once.
-
Increase engine speed to about 2500 rpm for approximately 2 minutes.
-
If the hydraulic lifters are still noisy, locate malfunctioning lifters as follows:
-
Remove cylinder head cover.
-
Rotate crankshaft clockwise, until cam of lifter to be checked is pointing upward.
-
Determine play between cam and valve lifter.
-
Push valve lifter down lightly with a wooden or plastic wedge. If when valve lifter is pushed down a 0.2 mm thick feeler gauge can be pushed
between camshaft and valve lifter, valve lifter is to be replaced.
Note:
-
After new lifters the engine must not be started for approximately 30 minutes. Hydraulic compensation elements must settle (otherwise valves
will strike pistons).
-
The oil check valve be replaced if irregular valve noises disappear after longer journeys but reappear after short journeys.
