Electric Fan

The electric cooling fan is a supplemental device that is activated by a two-stage temperature switch and/or the CLIMAtronic control module (GLX
model only). The fan circuit contains a pair of fuses, low-speed and high-speed relays, and a fan series resistor. Both relays receive battery power
when the engine is running.

When the air-conditioning is turned on, the CLIMAtronic provides a ground for the lowspeed fan relay. With the relay energized and the contacts
closed, battery power is applied to the fan resistor. The fan resistor creates a voltage drop in the electric fan power feed, which results in low-speed
operation. The low-speed fan relay can also be activated through the two-stage temperature switch. If Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) exceeds a
predetermined value, the low-speed contacts in the temperature switch close and the electric fan operates at low speed. In the event the coolant
exceeds a higher temperature threshold, the high-speed contacts in the temperature switch will close, energizing the high-speed fan relay. With this
relay activated, battery power bypasses the resistor to allow the electric fan to operate at high-speed. to operate at high-speed.
