Wheel Cylinder: Service and Repair

Component Notes And Information

NOTE:  During removal and installation procedures, refer to the component location illustration above and component notes below.

Spring plate
-

To remove push against the spring and turn through 90°

Spring

Brake shoe with lever for parking brake

Upper return spring
-

Unhook with pliers

Lower return spring
-

Lubricate contact points with G6, or equivalent, grease

Wedge spring

Brake shoe
-

Minimum lining thickness: 2.5 mm

Cap
-

Remove to check brake lining thickness

Tensioning pin

Wheel speed sensor
-

Used only on models with ABS

Backing plate

Socket-head bolt
-

Tighten to: 10 Nm (7 ft lb)

Wheel cylinder
-

Checking for leaks. See: Testing and Inspection

Adjusting wedge
-

To remove or install the brake drum, push upwards through a wheel bolt hole.

Push rod
-

Lubricate contact points with G6, or equivalent, grease

Locating spring
-

Unhook with pliers

Removal

1. Remove brake drum.
2. Remove spring retainers (1).
3. Unhook lower return spring (5).
4. Remove brake shoes.
5. Unhook parking brake cable.
6. Disconnect fluid line, cap and seal lines and fittings.
7. Remove socket head bolts (12) retaining wheel cylinder to backing plate.
8. Remove wheel cylinder from backing plate.
