Checking, refer to Lifter Valve.

Store with cam contact surface facing downwards.

Check camshaft axial clearance, before installing.

Oil the contact surfaces before assembly.
Outer Valve Spring (7)
-
Remove or install with Cylinder Head Assembly removed using valve spring compressor tool No 2037, or equivalent.
Inner Valve Spring (8)
-
Remove or install with Cylinder Head Assembly removed using valve spring compressor tool No 2037, or equivalent.
Valve Stem Seal (9)
-
Refer to Cylinder Head Assembly for procedure.
Valve Guide (11)
-
Testing and inspection, refer to Cylinder Head Assembly.

Replacement, refer to Cylinder Head Assembly.
Camshaft Oil Seal (12)
-
Oil but DO NOT grease seal lips.
-
To remove and install, remove camshaft bearing cap.
-
Refer to Timing Components for toothed timing belt removal.
Swirl Chamber (1)
-
Replace if damaged, refer to Cylinder Head Assembly.
SPECIAL TOOLS, TESTERS AND AUXILIARY ITEMS

Torque wrench, 5 to 50 Nm (4 to 37 ft lb) - Tool VAG 1331, or equivalent.
REMOVAL
1. Remove upper toothed timing belt guard and cylinder head (valve) cover
2. Turn crankshaft to Top Dead Center (TDC) for cylinder 1 (arrow).
3. Loosen toothed timing belt tensioner.
4. Take off toothed timing belts.
5. Loosen camshaft sprocket securing bolt 1/2 turn.

Release camshaft sprocket from camshaft taper by tapping with a hammer (using a drift through rear toothed timing belt guard opening).
6. Remove camshaft sprocket.
7. First remove bearing caps 5, 1 and 3, then loosen bearing caps 2 and 4 alternately and diagonally.
INSTALLING
NOTE:

When installing camshaft, the cylinder No. 1 cam lobes must point upwards.
