Temperature Gauge: Testing and Inspection
From July 1995

Checking engine coolant temperature (ECT) gauge (from July 1995) 

The following is required for troubleshooting:

- 

Multimeter Fluke 83 (US 1119)

- 

Connector test kit VW 1594

- 

Test box VW 1598 with adapter cable 1598/8

- 

Valid wiring diagram

Always check battery Ground (GND) connections for tight fit before troubleshooting

CAUTION! DO NOT damage, enlarge or bend connector terminals or cavities by touching probes into them when performing electrical checks. Use

connector test kit VW 1594 to make the necessary electrical connections.

Notes: 

^  If the fuel gauge is also malfunctioning, replace the Instrument cluster.
^  At coolant temperatures between 75°C (167°F) and 107°C (225°F), the needle of the coolant temperature gauge always remains on the 90°C

(194°F) mark.

^  If the wiring to the engine coolant temperature (ECT) gauge has an open or short circuit, the gauge needle will remain on the left side of the scale.

Test condition:

^  Fuse S16 and S21 OK

Preparations for troubleshooting:

- 

Disconnect electrical connection at engine coolant temperature sensor (G2).

- 

2.0L and 1.9L engines: Using probes from connector test kit VW 1594, connect instrument tester VW 1301 to yellow/red wire and
brown/green wire (at harness connector for engine coolant temperature sensor G2).

- 

2.8L VR6 engines: Using probes from connector test kit VW 1594, connect instrument tester VW 1301 to blue/white wire and brown/green
wire (at harness connector for engine coolant temperature sensor G2).

- 

Switch ON ignition and set instrument tester VW 3101 to the following values:

Deviation tolerance: one needle width!

If specification is not reached, follow test procedure.
