Engine Control Module: Description and Operation

BASIC FUNCTIONS (ECM)

AAA engines do not have provisions for adjustment of ignition timing, idle speed or mixture through Basic Settings (Function 04). These operating
parameters are pre-programmed into the ECM and adapted based on engine operating conditions. These adaptive settings are retained in the ECM's
memory when the ignition is switched off and become the starting point for subsequent engine operation. These retained values are said to be
"learned" values and can change or adapt as often as needed.

If the ECM is disconnected from the battery during repairs, the learned values are erased and the ECM will revert to the default values allowing the
engine to run. The default values may not match the current needs of the engine, which can result in temporary poor performance and driveability.
Also, when repairs have been made, such as repair of a vacuum leak, the default values will not match the current needs of the engine.

In both situations, the ECM will start from the default or baseline settings and re-learn and adapt to current operating conditions. This process can,
however, take some time.

When a scan tool is properly connected to the Motronic M2.9 ECM on AAA coded engines and set to Basic Settings (Function 04), the ECM can be
made to adapt to current operating conditions in several minutes rather than a longer period of time.

When Function 04 (basic settings) is selected, the scan tool does the following:

- 

Stabilize ignition timing.

- 

Stabilize idle speed.

- 

Disable the A/C compressor. Disable the EVAP system.
