Check wire between 5-pin connector terminal 1 and relay panel for open circuit using appropriate wiring diagram.
Specified value: max. 1.5 Ohms

Checking actuation

-

Remove fuse 28 for fuel pump or disconnect harness connectors from all fuel injectors.

-

Connect VAG1527B voltage tester to terminals 2 and 3 of 5-pin connector using adapter cables from VW1594 connector test kit.

-

Operate starter and check ignition signal from engine control module.
LED must flash.

-

Repeat check between terminals 2 and 4 and terminals 2 and 5.

If the LED does not flash:

-

Connect VAG1598/22 test box to Motronic ECM harness connector.

-

Check wiring between ECM/test box and 5-pin connector for open circuit using appropriate wiring diagram.
-

Connector terminal 3 to ECM/test box socket 71

-

Connector terminal 4 to ECM/test box socket 78

-

Connector terminal 5 to ECM/test box socket 70

-

Check wires for short circuits between one another.
Specified value: max. Infinity Ohms

If wiring is OK and voltage was present between contacts 1 and 2:

-

Replace Motronic ECM -J220-.  See: Computers and Control Systems/Engine Control Module/Service and Repair

If voltage supply and activation is OK:

-

Replace ignition coils and power output stage.  See: Service and Repair
