Passat Syncro Wagon V6-2771cc 2.8L DOHC (AHA) (1998)
The pistons must not be positioned at TDC.
Work sequence
- When installing the old drive chain, line up paint markings (arrows).
If a new drive chain is installed, distance between notches -A- and -B- on camshafts must equal the distance between 16 drive chain rollers. Illustration
shows where first and sixteenth drive chain rollers must be installed on chain gears.
Note:
Notch -A- is slightly offset inward toward drive chain roller -1-.

Place chain onto chain sprockets and camshafts as per markings (distance between markings equates to 16 rollers on the chain).

Slide in camshaft adjuster between drive chain (second technician required).

Install camshafts with drive chain and camshaft adjuster into cylinder head.

Oil camshaft contact surfaces.

Install bearing caps 2 and 4 for both camshafts, remember installation position (arrows).
Inlet shaft: casting points to chain
Exhaust shaft: casting points to exhaust manifold

Tighten bearing caps alternately and diagonally to 10 Nm

Lightly coat contact surfaces of bearing caps 1 and 7 with AMV 174 004 01 sealant.

Install bearing caps 1, 3, 5 and 7 and tighten to 10 Nm.

Remove retainer for camshaft adjuster 3366.
