Cylinder Head Gasket: Service and Repair
NOTE:
-
From November, 1993 all 1.9 liter diesel engines are equipped with a new metal cylinder head gasket with silicone coating.
-
The new metal cylinder head gasket can be installed on all 1.9 liter Diesel engines manufactured before November, 1993.
-
When installing a metal cylinder head gasket on an engine that previously used a plastic gasket, the swirl chambers should also be replaced.
-
Select a gasket with the same number of holes/notches when replacing gasket without other component replacement.
-
If pistons, rods or short block have been replaced proceed as follows:
-
Piston protrusion above TDC must be measured whenever new pistons, rods or a short block is installed.
-
Depending upon the piston protrusion above TDC, install the correct gasket using the following table:
^
Piston protrusion: 0.66 mm to 0.86 mm
Use gasket with: 1 Holes/notches
^
Piston protrusion: 0.87 mm to 0.90 mm
Use gasket with: 2 Holes/notches
^
Piston protrusion: 0.91 mm to 1.02 mm
Use gasket with: 3 Holes/notches
-
Cylinder head gasket identification:
-
Part number = black arrow
-
Holes/notches = white arrow
NOTE: If differing results are obtained when measuring piston protrusion, use the largest measurement to select the correct gasket.
