Temperature Gauge: Testing and Inspection
Up to July 1995
Checking engine coolant temperature (ECT) gauge (up to July 1995)
The following is required for troubleshooting:
-
Multimeter Fluke 83 (US 1119)
-
Connector test kit VW 1594
-
Test box VW 1598 with adapter cable 1598/8
-
Valid wiring diagram
Always check battery Ground (GND) connections for tight fit before troubleshooting
CAUTION! DO NOT damage, enlarge or bend connector terminals or cavities by touching probes into them when performing electrical checks. Use
connector test kit VW 1594 to make the necessary electrical connections.
Note: If the fuel gauge is also malfunctioning, check the voltage stabilizer first.
Test condition:
^ Ground supply to engine coolant temperature sensor (G2) OK
Preparations for troubleshooting:
-
Disconnect electrical connection at engine coolant temperature sensor (G2).
-
Using probes from connector test kit VW 1594, connect instrument tester VW 1301 to yellow/red wire and brown or brown/white wires at
harness connector for engine coolant temperature sensor (G2). (Engine code AAA: blue/white and brown wires).
-
Switch ON ignition and set instrument tester VW 3101 to the following values:
Deviation tolerance: one needle width!
If specification is not reached, proceed as follows:
