Compression Check: Testing and Inspection

SPECIAL TOOLS, TESTERS AND AUXILIARY ITEMS

Compression Tester tool No. US 1110, or equivalent.

^

Adaptor tool No. VAG 1381/12, or equivalent.

^

Swivel Wrench tool No. 3220, or equivalent.

TEST CONDITIONS 

-

Engine oil temperature 30°C (86°F) minimum.

TEST SEQUENCE 

1. Disconnect fuel cut-off valve on diesel injection pump.
2. Disconnect quantity adjuster harness connector on Diesel injection pump.
3. Remove all glow plugs using swivel wrench tool No. 3220, or equivalent. 
4. Screw in adaptor tool No. VAG 1323/12, or equivalent, in place of the glow plugs.
5. Check compression using compression tester tool No. US 1110, or equivalent.

NOTE:  For compression tester usage, see manufacturers operating instructions.

6. Operate starter until tester shows no further pressure increase.
7. Compression pressure:

-

New: 25-31 bar (362.5-449.5 psi) 

-

Wear limit: 19 bar (275.5 psi) 

-

Permissible difference between all cylinders: 5 bar (72.5 psi). 

8. Install glow plugs using swivel wrench.

-

Tighten to: 15 Nm (11 ft. lbs.). 

NOTE: 
-

A Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be generated as a result of breaking open the injection pump harness connector.

-

Interrogate and erase DTC memory to clear the DTC code.
