Connecting vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system -VAS 5051B- and selecting engine electronics control unit
All functions previously carried out with the fault reader -V.A.G 1551- can also be carried out with the vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system -VAS 5051B- in vehicle self-diagnosis mode. → Operating instructions for vehicle diagnosis, testing and information systemVAS 5051B.
Special tools and workshop equipment required
   
t  Vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system -VAS 5051B-
Test prerequisites
l  Fuse 11 on fuse holder B -SB11- OK.
l  The battery voltage must be at least 11.5 V.
l  Earth connections on engine and gearbox OK.
Procedure
–  Connect vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system -VAS 5051B- as follows:
  W00-10343
–  Pull out oil dipstick -1-.
–  Push diagnosis lead 5m -VAS 5051B/1- connector onto diagnosis connector.
–  Depending on the desired function, switch on ignition or start engine and run at idling speed. Selectable functions → Chapter.
  Note
t  The display fields will be displayed from top to bottom in functions 04 - Basic settings or 08 - Read data block.
t  If the display does not indicate as described in the work sequence: → Operating instructions for vehicle diagnosis, testing and information systemVAS 5051B.
Select operating mode:
–  Press button on display for “vehicle self-diagnosis”.
Select vehicle system:
–  Press “01 - Engine electronics” on display.

The control unit identification and coding -arrow- are indicated on display, e.g.:
If the coding differs from the vehicle version, then:
–  Check control unit coding → Chapter.
Select diagnostic function:
At this point all diagnostic functions are available.
–  Press the desired function on the display.
–  Further measures see repair procedures.
