Special tools and workshop equipment required
   
t  Torque wrench -V.A.G 1331-
  W00-0427
t  Removal wedge -3409-

t  Hose clip pliers -V.A.G 1275-
–  First check whether a coded radio is fitted. If so, obtain anti-theft code.
–  With ignition switched off, disconnect battery earth strap and remove battery with battery tray → Electrical system; Rep. gr.27.
–  If the air cleaner is located behind the battery, it must be removed → Rep. gr.23 or → Rep. gr.24.

–  Remove circlip -1-.
–  Take gear selector cable -2- off pin.

–  Separate cable locking mechanism on relay lever -3- from gate selector cable.
–  Pull locking mechanism forward to stop in -direction of arrow 1- and then lock by turning to left in -direction of arrow 2-.
–  Then push relay lever forwards (-in direction of arrow 3-).

–  Remove cable support bracket from gearbox -arrows-.
Gearbox selector lever and relay lever with cable end-pieces are shown removed for clarity of illustration.
–  Pry gaiter upwards out of centre console frame using removal lever -3409- → Chapter.

–  Then destroy clamp -arrow- and pull off gear knob with gaiter.
–  If noise insulation is present, remove it.
–  Remove centre console together with securing bracket → General body repairs, interior; Rep. gr.68.

–  Remove nuts for selector housing from body -arrows-.
–  If insulation tray is installed below engine and gearbox, remove it.
–  Remove tunnel bridge and separate exhaust system → Rep. gr.26.
–  Remove underbody panels → General body repairs, exterior; Rep. gr.50.
–  Swing selector housing down and remove with selector cables.
