Removing and installing engine oil cooler Special tools and workshop equipment required

t  Used oil collection and extraction unit -V.A.G 1782-

t  Drip tray for workshop hoist -VAS 6208-

t  Hose clip pliers -VAS 6362- Removing –  Remove engine cover panel → Chapter. –  Remove cowling → Chapter. –  Drain coolant → Chapter.

–  In addition to draining coolant from engine, pull coolant hose from oil filter bracket -arrow-.

–  Remove oil filter element.

–  Unscrew bolts -arrows-. –  Remove oil cooler from housing. Installing   Note t  Renew gaskets, seals and O-rings. t  Hose connections as well as pipes and hoses of air channels must be free of oil and grease when installing. t  Secure all hose connections with the correct type of hose clips (same as original equipment) → Electronic parts catalogue. Install in reverse order.

–  Insert new seals → Item into oil-free lugs -arrow- on oil filter bracket. –  Carefully slide engine oil cooler onto centring pins.

–  Press oil cooler on until it is flush -1- with end of centring pins. –  Start new bolts and screw in until heads make contact.

–  Tighten bolts -arrows- in 3 stages and in diagonal sequence. t  Step 1: tighten by hand t  Step 2: tighten to 5 Nm t  Step 3: tighten to 11 Nm –  Install oil filter element, replenish engine oil and check oil level → Chapter. –  Replenish coolant in cooling system, change coolant if engine oil cooler has been renewed → Chapter.
