Ignition system
General notes on ignition system
t  The engine control unit -J623- is equipped with self-diagnosis.
t  For trouble-free operation of electrical components, a voltage of at least 11.5 V is necessary.
t  In some tests, a fault may be detected and stored by the engine control unit -J623-. Therefore after completing all checks and repairs the fault memory must be read and if necessary cleared.
  WARNING
To prevent injuries to persons and/or damage to the injection and ignition system, the following must be observed:
t  Do not touch or disconnect ignition cables when the engine is running or being turned at starter speed.
t  Switch off ignition before connecting or disconnecting injection and ignition system wiring as well as test instrument cables.
Note the following if testers and measuring instruments have to be used during a road test:
Test and measuring instruments must always be secured to the rear seat and operated by a second person from this location.
If the engine is to be turned at starter speed without starting:
t  Remove fuse for fuel pump control unit -J538- from fuse holder. Fuse assignment → Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations

t  Remove all spark plug connectors -arrows- from spark plugs using puller -T10112 A-.
