Renewing camshaft oil seals
   
Renewing camshaft oil seals
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Fitting tool -T10015-
t  Oil seal extractor -T10018-
t  Camshaft lock -T10016-
t  Torque wrench -V.A.G 1331-

Removing
–  First remove both toothed belts → Chapter.
–  Turn crankshaft back slightly.
  Note
Lock camshaft pulleys by pushing both locating pins from camshaft lock -T10016- fully into fitting holes of camshaft housing.
–  Remove camshaft pulleys. Hold camshaft pulleys with camshaft lock -T10016- to loosen bolts.
–  Screw inner part of oil seal extractor -T10018- two turns (approx. 3 mm) out of outer part and lock with knurled screw.
–  Oil threaded head of oil seal extractor.
   
–  Screw oil seal extractor -T10018- forcibly as far as possible into oil seal.
–  Loosen knurled screw and turn inner part against camshaft until oil seal is pulled out.
Installing
–  Lightly oil sealing lip of oil seal.

–  Fit guide sleeve -T10015/2- onto camshaft journal.
–  Slide oil seal over guide sleeve.
–  Press oil seal in onto stop with press sleeve -T10015/1- and bolt -T10015/3-.
–  Install camshaft pulleys.
  Note
Observe position of pulleys relative to camshaft keyways.
–  Lock each camshaft pulley with the camshaft lock -T10016- and tighten new bolts to 20 Nm. Then tighten bolt 1/4 turn (90°) further.
Installing toothed belt → Chapter.
Further assembly is basically the reverse of the dismantling sequence.
