Removing and installing fuel delivery unit > < Emptying fuel tank if it is more than 3/4 full

–  Fold rear seat bench forwards.
2-door vehicles
–  Remove sill panel strips → General body repairs, interior; Rep. gr.68.
–  Fold floor covering as far forward as possible.
   
4-door vehicles
–  Remove clip -arrow - on both sides of vehicle and raise trim -1-, removing if necessary → General body repairs, interior; Rep. gr.68.
–  Fold floor covering -2- as far forward as possible.

Vehicles with screw-down cover
–  Remove cover -1- from fuel delivery unit, unscrewing bolts -arrows- to do so.

–  If present, bend panel strips -arrows- downwards at separating line.

Vehicles with snap-on cover
–  Unclip cover -1- for flange at retaining tabs -arrows-, using removal wedge -3409-.

Continuation for all vehicles
  WARNING
The fuel line is under pressure.
Risk of injury to eyes and skin from fuel.
Wear eye protection and protective clothing to avoid eye injuries and skin contact. Before loosening hose connections, wrap a cloth around the connection. Then release pressure by carefully opening the connection point.
–  Pull connector -1- off flange -2-.
–  Pull fuel lines -3- off flange -3-.
  Note
Press in securing ring to release fuel lines.
–  Fit union nut tool -3217- on the three rounded ribs of the union nut and unscrew union nut from flange.

–  Press union nut tool -3217- firmly onto union nut.
–  Raise flange of fuel delivery unit.
–  Insert suction hose of fuel extractor -VAS 5190- as far as possible into fuel tank and extract fuel.
If fuel tank needs only to be emptied, install fuel delivery unit again. → Chapter
