Fluid - A/T: Testing and Inspection
The function of the transmission can be impaired if the ATF level is too high or too low.
Check the ATF regularly and use the following guidelines to accurately determine the proper level.
ATF level, checking
-
ATF at operating temperature of approx. 60°C (attained after driving approx. 6 miles after a cold start)

vehicle on a level surface
-
parking brake engaged
-
selector lever at "P"
-
engine idling
-
use a lint-free cloth to wipe dipstick
ATF Dipstick (Early Version)
-
difference between Min./max. marks: 0.35 qts. (0.33 L)
-
when cold, fill to below the Mm. mark, warm up to operating temperature and fill to between marks
ATF Dipstick (Late Version)
-
difference between Min./Max. marks: 0.24 qts. (0.23 L)

when cold, fill to 20°C mark, warm up to operating temperature and fill to between marks
CAUTION
Do NOT overfill. Too much ATF can cause damage and must be drained.
Use only ATF marked DEXRON. Do NOT use any lubricant additives

The ATF used in production vehicles has changed in composition and color from that used in previous years.
