Crankshaft Main Bearing Seal: Service and Repair

Sealing Flange, Drive Plate Side

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

‹› Pulling fixture (T10122) 

‹› Torque wrench (5 to 50 Nm) (V.A.G 1331)

Removing

-

Remove engine --> [ Engine, Removing ] See: Service and Repair/Removal and Replacement/Engine Removing.

-

Separate engine from transmission.

-

Remove drive plate --> [ Drive Plate ] See: Transmission and Drivetrain/Flex Plate/Service and Repair/Drive Plate.

-

Remove oil pan --> [ Oil Pan, Assembly Overview ] See: Engine Lubrication/Oil Pan/Service and Repair.

-

Remove sealing flange - arrow - from cylinder block. 

-

Remove old gasket.

Installing

‹› In the following work procedure, the seal is shown without the sealing flange.

‹› If repairs are required, the complete sealing flange with seal must be replaced. Then to install, use the supplied support sleeve.

-

Clean sealing surfaces of sealing flange and cylinder block. Sealing surfaces must be free of oil and grease.

-

Before installing, remove oil remains from end of crankshaft with a clean cloth.

-

Place a new gasket - 1 - onto alignment bushings of the cylinder head.
