Ignition Lock: Service and Repair

1.

Remove turn signal and windshield wiper switch as outlined in this chapter.

2.

Loosen ignition/steering lock housing clamp bolt. Turn ignition ``On.''

Using tool No. VW 267a clamp steering column coupling together.

Using a suitable puller, remove ignition/steering lock housing together with spacing sleeve.

5.

To remove ignition switch, remove screw securing switch to bottom of ignition/steering lock and pull switch out.

To remove steering lock cylinder, refer to Fig. 1. Dimension a= 12 mm (1/2 inch); b= 10 mm (3/8 inch). Using a 1/8 inch drill, make a hole where
specified then, using a piece of wire or a punch, press in lock pin and remove lock cylinder.

7.

To reinstall, place ignition/steering lock housing over column tube.

Using tool No. VW420 drive spacing sleeve on column until clearance between top of spacing sleeve and top of steering shaft is 51 mm (2 inches)
and tighten lock housing clamp bolt.

9.

Reverse remaining procedure to install. Torque steering wheel nut to 36 ft. lbs.
