Engine Control Module: Testing and Inspection
Ignition
ENGINE STARTS AND RUNS
1.
Check and adjust base timing to specifications.
2.
Disconnect vacuum hose at ignition control unit.
3.
Increase engine RPM and check that ignition advances.
4.
If ignition does not advance, replace ignition control unit.
5.
Check for vacuum at control unit hose. Repair or replace if necessary.
6.
Reconnect vacuum hose to ignition control unit.
7.
Increase engine RPM and hold at 1500 RPM. Check that ignition advances.
8.
If ignition does not advance, replace ignition control unit. Otherwise, ignition system is OK.
ENGINE WILL NOT START
1.
Check for spark at coil wire and plug wires. If spark is present, check secondary ignition components. If no spark is present, proceed to step 2.
2.
Disconnect distributor connector.
3.
Turn ignition ON and bridge terminals B and C several times at the distributor harness. Coil wire should spark each time the terminals are bridged.
4.
If coil wire sparks, check and replace the distributor hall switch.
5.
If coil wire does not spark, check control unit ground connection at intake manifold.
6.
If ground is OK, check for voltage at terminal 15 at the ignition coil. If voltage is not present, check the circuit between the ignition switch and
terminal 15 of the coil.
7.
If voltage is present, replace the ignition control unit and harness.
