Suspension Strut / Shock Absorber: Service and Repair
Shock Absorber

Front

    The following procedures allow servicing of the shock absorbers without removing the strut assembly from vehicle.

1.

Raise vehicle and place stands under jacking points, then remove wheel.

2.

Using tool 5039 (hydraulic shocks) or 5173 (gas shocks), loosen shock absorber retaining nut several turns.

3.

Disconnect steering rod from steering arm using tool 5043.

4.

Disconnect stabilizer bar from link attachment.

5.

Disconnect brake line bracket.

6.

Remove cover for spring and strut assembly upper attachment.

Using tool 5036 and 5037, loosen center nut, Fig. 3.

8.

Place alignment marks on nut plate and wheel housing, then remove strut upper retaining nuts. Lower jack, support strut assembly when lowering
jack so that brake lines and hoses do not become damaged. Hook tool No. 5045 to strut assembly and stabilizer bar.

9.

Install two 5040 spring compressors. Be sure compressor spans five coils or spring will not be sufficiently compressed. Tighten compressors.

10.

Remove center nut using tools mentioned above, then remove spring seat, rubber bumper and shock absorber protector.

11.

Loosen spring compressors and remove coil spring.

12.

Using tool 5039 (hydraulic shocks) or 5173 (gas shocks), remove shock absorber retaining nut. Use a pipe wrench to hold the outer housing. Be
sure to place the pipe wrench on the weld of the housing.

13.

Pull shock absorber out of housing.

14.

Reverse procedure to install, ensuring that marks on nut plate and wheel housing are aligned. Torque strut upper retaining nuts to 15 ft. lbs.

Rear

1.

Raise car and place stands under the jacking points of body.

2.

Remove the wheel. Unload axle by jacking up the axle.

3.

Remove upper and lower retaining bolts and remove shock absorber.
