EGR valves exist in various designs (different opening pressures, flow).
Ensure that correct valve is used.
The valves are marked with the Part Number.

CHECKING INDIVIDUAL COMPONENTS:

Hoses and connections: 

Check that the vacuum hoses are in good condition, correctly connected and that they are not pinched or blocked.

Thermostat valve: 

When engine is at operating temperature and off, disconnect thermostat valve hoses from intake manifold and connection "R" from vacuum amplifier.
Blow through the thermostat valve to check if it is open. Fig. 90.
If valve is still closed, replace and retest with new thermostat valve.

EGR valve check: 

Disconnect vacuum hose from valve.
Connect a vacuum pump to the E.G.R. valve. Apply vacuum to the valve and see if E.G.R. valve opens. If E.G.R. valve does not open, replace and
retest with new valve. Fig. 91.
Reconnect vacuum hose to E.G.R. valve.
