EMISSION PERFORMANCE

When using gasohol, HC and CO, emissions may remain the same or descrease slightly. However, NOX emission may increase slightly as will
evaporation emissions due to the higher volatility of gasohol.

At present, U.S. government agencies continue to investigate the performance of gasoline containing ethanol or methanol. However, state and/or
local governments may have regulations restricting gasohol usage. If so, these regulations should be observed.

OCTANE RATING

Volvo engines require unleaded gasoline with an (R + M)/2 octane rating of 87 or higher. This is generally equivalent to a research number (RON)
of 91 or higher.

To improve the driveability and performance of turbocharged engines at altitudes above 2000 ft. (600 m), and in hot climates, we recommend the use of
premium unleaded gasoline with an (R + M)/2 rating of 91.

DETERIORATION OF PAINT WORK

If gasohol or gasoline containing methanol comes in contact with a painted surface, it may cause dulling or softening of the paint.

WATER CONTAMINATION

A.

The presence of alcohol in the fuel tank may lead to fuel component separation at low ambient temperatures, and if more than a small amount
of water is present, it could be drawn into the engine causing damage to fuel system components.

B.

Alcohol prevents ice formation in fuel systems.

8.

SERVICE ADJUSTMENTS

A.

The service specifications as required for certification and detailed in the Service Manuals must be maintained.

B.

It is recommended, however, that when gasohol is initially used, that the CO and idling speed be checked.

NOTE!

Mixture adjustment on all 1981 and later models are sealed and should not be tampered with. Also, the idle speed adjustment on some 1981
and later models is sealed.

C.

All vehicles with in-tank pre-pumps should have two clamps mounted to the rubber hose, between the pre-pump and the fuel sender unit, to
prevent leakage.

WARRANTY COVERAGE

The use of gasohol containing up to 10 percent ETHANOL does not void the vehicle warranty. However, because the Volvo vehicle was designed to
operate on gasoline, and gasohol has different characteristics, certain components and/or systems (certain examples are presented below) may be
adversely effected by the use of gasohol.

WHILE USE OF GASOLINE CONTAINING METHANOL IS NOT APPROVED FOR VOLVO VEHICLES, AND COULD VOID THE
WARRANTY, GAS LINE ANTIFREEZE CONTAINING METHANOL MAY BE USED AS A DE-ICING AGENT PROVIDED MIXING
INSTRUCTIONS ARE FOLLOWED.

EXAMPLES:

A.

Dulling or softening of the paint due to contact with gasohol or gasoline containing methanol, is NOT covered under the vehicle warranty.

B.

Engine performance problems, that are related solely to gasohol, or gasoline containing methanol are NOT covered under the vehicle warranty.

C.

Fuel system component deterioration caused by the use of gasohol, or gasoline containing methanol is NOT covered under the vehicle warranty.
