Front Crankshaft Seal: Service and Repair

    Before suspecting that the camshaft, crankshaft or intermediate shaft front seals are leaking, check engine flame guard, if equipped. A
restricted flame guard will cause the engine oil dipstick to jump out of the pipe seat, engine knock and oil leakage at front seals. If any of these
symptoms are encountered, thoroughly clean flame guard and engine assembly, then check for oil leaks.

Remove timing belt as outlined previously.

On B-230 engines, remove tensioner and inner timing belt cover.

If seals require replacement, proceed as follows: 

a. Remove pulley(s) using tool 5034 or equivalent.
b. Using a suitable screwdriver, remove front seal(s). Do not damage sealing surface when removing seal.
c. Check sealing surfaces for wear and/or damage.
d. Coat new seal with suitable grease.
e. Using tool 5025 or equivalent, install camshaft or intermediate sprocket seal and seal seat.
f.

Using tool 5024 for B-21 and B-23 engines or tool 5283 for B-230 engine, install crankshaft seal and seal seat.

g. Install sprocket (s). Ensure camshaft sprocket side plates face outward from sprocket. Torque sprocket attaching bolt to 37 ft. lbs. Use tool

5034 to hold sprocket from turning when tightening. Install intermediate sprocket with marking (indentation) facing outward. Torque
sprocket attaching bolt to 37 ft. lbs. Use tool 5034 to hold sprocket from turning while tightening.

h. Install inner timing cover and belt tensioner, if applicable.

Ensure timing marks are correctly aligned, then install timing belt and cover(s) as outlined previously. Never turn crankshaft or camshaft
with timing belt removed or serious engine damage will result.
