Exhaust Gas Recirculation: Testing and Inspection
B21A Engine (Canada Only) W/ Manual Transmission
Fig. 85 CHECK E.G.R. VALVE
The E.G.R. valve should only open at part throttle when the engine is at operating temperature. To check the E.G.R. valve, observe the movement of
the link rod at different engine speeds and temperatures. Fig. 85.
NOTE:
It is difficult to determine whether the valve closes completely. The only way to check this is to remove the pipe between the valve and the intake
manifold and to feel if the valve is leaking.
A valve which is open when the engine is idling results in uneven idling, and the engine may stall.
Check that the E.G.R. valve:
1.
is closed at all engine speeds with cold engine, i.e., coolant temperature below 55°C (130°F).
2.
opens at part throttle with hot engine, i.e., coolant temperatures above 60°C (14O°F).
3.
Vehicles with delay valve: E.G.R. valve opens approx. 2 seconds after engine is accelerated.
4.
closes when the engine speed drops to an idle.
IMPORTANT:
EGR valves exist in various designs (different opening pressures, flow).
Ensure that correct valve is used.
