Wheel Speed Sensor: Service and Repair

LESS MULTI-LINK AXLE

1.

Disconnect battery ground cable.

2.

Disconnect electrical connector for rear sensor (located in trunk).

3.

Before removing speed sensor from rear axle, check clearance between sensor tip and pulse wheel as follows:
a. Remove oil plug from axle assembly inspection cover.
b. Use a feeler gauge to check clearance.
c. Clearance should be .023-.024 inch.
d. If clearance is not as specified, it can be adjusted by replacing the shim. Shims are available in thicknesses .0394-.0709 inches, in increments

of .008 inch.

Remove speed sensor form axle assembly.

5.

Reverse procedure to install. Apply a small amount of lubricant No. 11610375-5 or equivalent to the sensor before installation.

WITH MULTI-LINK AXLE

1.

Disconnect battery ground cable.

2.

Lift out spare wheel and fold back carpet to expose filler pipe.

3.

Remove covers over filler pipe and break seal on sensor cable connector.

4.

Disconnect connector and press out cable and rubber grommet.

5.

Raise rear section of vehicle and place jack with fixture 5972 or equivalent under rear axle.

6.

Remove four bolts which hold member to body.

7.

Lower rear axle slightly. Driveshaft must not press against fuel tank.

8.

Disconnect right hand brake wire from attachment.

9.

Remove sensor cable from clamps, noting placement for installation.

10.

Clean area around sensor and remove sensor assembly.

11.

Reverse procedure to install, using new O-ring on sensor.
