Bearing Journal Taper & Out-of-Round
Measure bearing journals:
-
Use a micrometer to measure for taper and out-of-round. Measure at several points around the periphery and along the journal length.
-
Max. out-of-round: 0.05 mm (0.002 in)
-
Max. taper:
0.05 mm (0.002 in)
-
If journals are damaged or taper/out-of-round exceeds specifications, the engine must be removed and crankshaft replaced or ground.
Note: If engine is removed, the cylinder head must be fitted with at least six bolts before removing.
Clean cylinder bores:
-
Push paper into cylinder bores to prevent dirt from entering crankshaft oil ducts. Use fine emery cloth or honing tool to clean cylinder bores.
Cylinder Bore Measurement
Measure cylinder bores:
-
Use a 50-100 mm (2-4 in) hole gauge.
-
Measure for maximum wear crosswise of engine, just below piston upper turning point.
-
Measure for minimum wear lengthwise of engine, at the piston lower turning point.
