EGR Temperature Sensor: Description and Operation
Fig. 123 E.G.R. TEMPERATURE SENDER
PURPOSE
The EGR temperature sensor measures the temperature of the exhaust gases returned to the intake manifold. By measuring temperature variations,
the control unit determines whether or not the E.G.R. system is operating.
DESIGN
Positive temperature coefficient (PTC) and negative temperature coefficient (NTC) sensors are used in different EGR systems.
NOTE: To avoid confusion, PTC sensors use NPTF 1/8 inch threads while NTC sensors use M10 x 1.25 thread.
NOTE:
Since the sender is highly sensitive to shock and impact, particular care must be taken when handling and installing.
LOCATION:
Generally, PTC sensors are located in the upper EGR pipe between the intake manifold and the EGR valve. However, many EGR systems have
been converted to use sensors directly in the EGR valve.
NTC sensors are located in the EGR valve.
