Axle Bearing: Service and Repair
1.
Raise and support vehicle, then remove rear wheel.
2.
On 240 models, disconnect brake pipe mounting brackets, then remove collision guard.
3.
On all models, remove brake caliper and secure to spring.
4.
Remove brake disc and shoes.
5.
On models except 240, remove pressure plate bolts.
6.
On all models, invert brake disc and secure to axle with tapered end of lug nuts facing outward.
7.
Remove axle shaft using brake disc to withdraw shaft.
8.
Remove inner seal using a long screwdriver, then clean inside of rear axle tube.
9.
Remove bearing and outer seal using press tool 5212 and a hydraulic press.
10.
Install bearing and outer seal using support 5010, standard handle 1801 and a hydraulic press.
11.
Install inner seal using drift 5243 and standard handle 1801, then reverse removal steps to install axle shaft.
