New fuel filter for diesel engines
Lesser-quality diesel fuel can cause diminished engine performance and increased black exhaust smoke.
Lower-quality diesel fuel and/or paraffin-based precipitants can cause blockage of the fuel filter. This is especially true of 'summer fuel' used at low
ambient temperature.
Blockage of the fuel filter can create a vacuum in the fuel hose leading from the filter to the injection pump. This can lead to a condition known as fuel
cavitation (foaming). Cavitation will alter injection timing causing a decrease in engine performance, as well as an increase in black exhaust smoke.
Confim that all hoses and connections between the filter and fuel tank are secure. If all connections are secure, install new fuel filter, p/n 3547862-7.
Note:
Fuel filter replacement is included as part of every 30,000 mile (48,000km) interval maintenance service. Draining the fuel filter of
condensate must also be carried out at recommended intervals (see maintenance service manuals).
If installing the new filter is ineffective in reducing smoke emissions, follow procedures in TP 31514/1.
