THIS SERVICE BULLETIN IS APPLICABLE TO THE U.S. AND CANADIAN MARKETS

Engine oil requirements have become more critical in recent years due to continuous engine emission related changes. To restate Volvo's position, the
following basic information and specific Volvo engine requirements are listed.

FREQUENT TERMS USED IN OIL CLASSIFICATION

SAE Viscosity Number

The SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) viscosity number, classifies oils according to their resistance to flow.

The number, for example SAE 10W-30, provides information about lubrication properties at different temperatures.

The W rating, here 10W, is an indication of how fast the engine will turnover in winter and how well the oil will flow to lubricate the critical parts. Low
numbers increase the cranking speed and improves lubrication at low ambient temperatures. The high temperature viscosity is specified by the second
number, for example 30. Higher numbers are recommended in hot climates.

Oil which covers three or more grades, like the 10W-30, in the SAE system are designated multigrade oils.
API Engine Service Classification

API (American Petroleum Institute) classifies oil by quality for specific service.

Volvo's minimum requirement for gasoline engines is SF and for diesel CD

SE - Service typical of gasoline engines in passenger cars beginning in 1972. Oils designed for this service provide more protection against oil oxidation,
high temperature engine deposits, rust and corrosion in gasoline engines; may be used when either SC or SD categories are recommended.

SF - Service typical of gasoline engines in passenger cars beginning about 1980. Oils developed for this service provide increased oxidations stability
and improved antiwear performance relative to oils which meet the minimum requirements for API Service Category SE. These oils also provide
protection against engine deposits, rust and corrosion. Oil meeting API Service Category SF may be used where API Service Categories SE, SD, or SC
are recommended.
CC For Diesel Engine Service

Moderate Duty Diesel and Gasoline Engine Service

Service typical of lightly supercharged diesel engines operated in moderate to severe duty and has included certain heavy duty, gasoline engines.
These oils provide protection from high temperature deposits in lightly supercharged diesels and also from rust, corrosion, and low temperature
deposits in gasoline engines.

CD For Diesel Engine Service

Severe Duty Diesel Engine Service

Service typical of supercharged diesel engines in high speed, high output duty requiring high effective control of wear and deposits. Oils
designed for this service provide protection from bearing corrosion and from high temperature deposits in supercharged diesel engines when
using fuels of a wide quality range.
