Lubricate each shim on both sides with a thin coating (approx. 0. 1-0.2 mm) of silicone grease, p/n 1161325-4.
Girling front:

The backing plates of pads used in Girling calipers are provided with an anti-squeal coating elminating the necessity of applying
silicone grease on production models. As a service measure however, the backing plates of these pads may also be coated with
silicone grease to counteract brake noise.

Note:

When installing pads in the caliper:

Depress the brake pistons slowly and carefully with an adjustable pliers until the rubber dust caps are slightly below the piston ends. Do this to ensure
that the caps are not damaged by the pad backing plates when the caliper is swung back into position.

Note:

Always check for proper caliper sliding function when changing pads.

Rear Brakes, ATE

Cleaning rear brake calipers

When working on rear brakes (e.g., when replacing pads), calipers must be thoroughly cleaned. A wire brush is suitable for this purpose. Leave
anti-squeal shims in place to protect brake piston dust caps.

Remedies For Brake Noise

Anti-squeal shims (see illus.) may be installed a follows to help eliminate squealing or screeching:

A.

Install one stainless-steel anti-squeal shim, p/n 1359772-9, immediately in front of the piston on each side of the caliper.

B.

Install one coated anti-squeal shim, p/n 1228590-4, behind the brake pad on each side of the caliper.

C.

Brake pad backing plate

Note:

This means that two anti-squeal shims will be installed between each brake pad and piston.

Note:

Rregarding anti-squeal shims B:

Lubricate both sides of each shim with a thin coating (approx. 0. 1-0.2 mm) of silicone grease, p/n 1161325-4.

Anti-squeal shims B are included in the kit for the present. However, these will be discontinued during 1990, and will be replaced by pads with an
anti-squeal coating on the backing plate.

On cars with backing plates of the new type, anti-squeal shims A must be coated with silicone grease, p/n 1161325-4.
Brake noise on earlier models where the piston rim is provided with an opening may be corrected by turning the piston so that the opening faces to the
front of the car. Use tool 2918.

Note:

The illustration shows a mirror image of the piston rim imposed on the shim.
