Altitude Compensator: Description and Operation

The Environmental Protection Agency has established emission regulations for vehicles sold for principal use at altitudes above 1,219 meters
(4,000 ft.).
All models equipped with D24T diesel engines are affected by this regulation and must be modified prior to sale in high altitude areas. These
modifications will reduce smoke, hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide emissions while improving performance.
Special stick-on labels are available from Volvo and must be affixed to the vehicle once the modification has been done. The special stick-on labels
should be affixed to the injection pump and next to the tune-up or emission information decal.
For vehicles previously modified for high altitude and now regularly operated below 1,219 meters (4,000 ft.), reverse the procedure stated below and
remove the stick-on labels.
Vehicles set up for low altitude operation and used mostly above 1,219 meters (4,000 ft.), follow the procedures below.

CALCULATIONS PRIOR TO ADJUSTMENTS:

Increase injection timing:
Increase (advance) injection timing by 0.07mm (0.0028 in) for each 1,000 meters (3,300 ft.) increase in altitude.

EXAMPLE:
For an altitude of 2,000 meters (6,600 ft.) above sea level, calculate injection timing as follows:
0.85mm is normal setting.

2,000 meters

0.85mm + ( --------------- x 0.07 ) = 0.99 mm

1,000 meters

0.99 mm = high altitude setting.

Reduce fuel injection amount:
Reduce by 2.3 mm3/stroke for each 1,000 meters (3,300 ft.) increase in altitude.
This corresponds to counter-clockwise turning of the adjustment screw by 35°.

EXAMPLE:
For an altitude of 2,000 meters (6,600 ft.) above sea level, calculate injection setting as follows:

2,000 meters
--------------- x 35° = 70°
1,000 meters

Fuel injection adjustment screw should be turned 70° counter-clockwise.  

NOTE:
Diesel engines from 1984 year model on, are equipped with an automatic altitude compensating regulator system. There is no special adjustment
needed.
