Wastegate: Description and Operation
In order to obtain high torque at low engine RPM, the turbocharger is designed to generate high boost pressure even at relatively low engine RPM. A
wastegate which is set to open at 10.9 psi is used to prevent excessive boost pressure at high RPM.
Should the wastegate fail to open and boost pressure continue to rise, a safety blow-off valve mounted on the intake manifold will open at 11.4 psi and
return some of the air flow back to the turbocharger inlet. When the blow-off valve opens, it also triggers a warning light on the instrument panel.
