LEAD PHASEDOWN - CANADA

The availability of leaded fuel is to be reduced during 1990. By December 1, 1990 maximum lead content of gasoline will be 5 mg/liter. Customers may
have questions regarding the effect of this regulation on their Volvo, especially on older cars designed to run on leaded gasoline. The following is
Volvo's position on the use of no-lead fuel, and should serve as a guide to owners who want to achieve the maximum service life from their Volvo cars.

1971 and Earlier Models

These vehicles were originally designed for operation on leaded fuel. Operation on the unleaded fuel now available may lead to somewhat more rapid
wear of valve seats, carburetor jets and needle valves.

To minimize this effect, the following precautions are recommended:

1.

Gasoline with a minimum 89 (R+M/2) octane, or greater, should be used. (89 R + M/2 is equivalent to 93 RON)

2.

Avoid prolonged engine operation at engine speeds above 3000 rpm or with heavyloads.

3.

Check and (if necessary) adjust valve clearance more frequently. An interval of one half the original service interval is recommended.

4.

Also check CO levels more frequently to indicate whether the carburetor jet or needle needs replacement.

1972 and Later Models

These vehicles are designed to operate satisfactorily on unleaded gasoline, and are not affected by the new regulations. However, the required minimum
octane must still be utilized.

Vehicles with Catalytic Converters must continue to use unleaded fuel only. Failure to do so may void the emissions warranty and may be a violation of
Canadian

Federal or Provincial Law.

Fuels containing oxygenates (alcohol or ethers) are limited to ethanol at a maximum concentration of 10%, and MTBE (methyl tertiary Butyl ether) at a
maximum concentration of 15%. Please refer to owners manual for precaution and other warning statements.
