The hub (4) is positioned 3 mm (1/8") outside the pulley (refer to illustration).

The idler pulley has a hub cover (5) to protect the hub. (The cover is mounted on the other side of the pulley and cannot be seen in the picture.)

A stethoscope with a tube is recommended for fault tracing.

WARNING

Hold the stethoscope tube well away from moving parts in the engine. If the tube should contact a moving part of the engine personal injury could
result.

Remark:
Take care when tracing noise. Localize the source of the noise before attempting a repair.

NOISE FROM DRIVE BELT

This section describes sounds that occur at the belt entry or exit points from the pulley.

Hissing noise

Occurs on:

Cars with A/C.

Can be heard outside the car as a clear

hissing/sizzling noise similar to a leak in the exhaust system at the manifold.

Analysis method:

Let the car idle with A/C on. Stand at the night front wheel and listen for a sound that increases when the A/C starts up.
