Radiator Cooling Fan Motor: Testing and Inspection

FAULT INDICATIONS

Cooling fan does not operate at correct speed or operates continuously.  Symptom is permanent (not intermittent).

FAULT TRACING CONDITIONS

Before fault tracing, ensure that:
^ No diagnostic trouble codes are present, and
^ All fuses are clean and intact.

RUNS CONTINUOUSLY AT HALF SPEED

^ Half speed signal lead short circuited to ground.
^ Faulty fan relay.

RUNS CONTINUOUSLY AT FULL SPEED

^ Full speed signal lead short circuited to ground.
^ Faulty fan relay.

DOES NOT RUN AT HALF SPEED

^ Open circuit in half speed signal lead.
^ Faulty fan (motor) or fan relay.

DOES NOT RUN AT FULL SPEED

^ Open circuit in full speed signal lead.
^ Faulty fan (motor) or fan relay.

FAN INOPERATIVE

^ Open circuit in power supply or ground lead.
^ Faulty fan (motor) or fan relay.
