Air Bag(s) Arming and Disarming: Service and Repair
Side Air Bag System Disarming
AIR BAG SYSTEM DISARMING AND ARMING
On models equipped with microprocessor radios, always turn them off before disconnecting or connecting the battery ground cable to prevent radio
damage.
To disarm air bag/Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), turn ignition Off,
then disconnect battery ground cable. Wait at least 10.0 seconds after disconnection prior to performing any service procedures. The SRS is designed to
retain enough deployment voltage for a short time even after the battery ground cable has been disconnected. Performing service before the minimum
10.0 second lapse may cause unwanted deployment and possible injury.
Fig. 1 SIPS Bag Transport Safety Device Installation
When beginning service operations on vehicles with side impact air bags (SIPS) always lock the (SIPS) bag with the transport safety device. Lift
up the seat pocket then lift the front edge and push the seat pocket backward. Remove the safety device from its holder and attach it to the
sensor unit as shown in Fig. 1. Failure to do so can cause damage to the crash sensor.
