On some 1995 850 models, and all 1996 models, a side impact air bag system, Fig. 4, is available. The system is located on the outside edges of the seat
back on the driver and front passenger seats. This system is mechanically triggered, requires no electrical hook up, and does not incorporate a diagnostic
system or a warning lamp. All components are contained in the seats. If a side impact of sufficient force is encountered, the seat base mounted sensor
will trigger the system. When contacted by the door, the pressure plate will deform the aluminum cover, pushing on the firing pin, releasing the ignition
charge. This charge creates an impulse which is routed through the firing circuit. The charge ignites a power charge in the gas generator. The gas charge
is routed through the firing chamber tube, inflating the air bag. Approximately three milliseconds after the first gas generator has been activated, the
second gas generator is activated to maintain pressure and volume of the inflated air bag module. A vent hole in the bag cushion will allow the bag to
slowly collapse after the activation.
