Steering Shaft: Description and Operation
The steering shaft is in two sections and is provided with two universal joints, one between the upper and lower shaft sections, and the other between the
lower shaft and the steering gear. The upper section of the steering shaft is, in turn, divided to prevent intrusion into the passenger compartment in the
event of a collision. This joint incorporates a rubber sound-insulating element. As a further safety measure, the steering wheel is provided with flat
spokes which deform if excessive load is imposed on the wheel.
