Volvo Cars of North America, Inc., and Volvo Canada Limited have announced a safety recall affecting the engine block heater which may have been
installed as an accessory in certain 1993 through 1996 850 Series vehicles.

A total of 400 components in the U.S. and 3,600 in Canada are potentially affected; however, the corrective action will be performed on all block heaters
as it is unknown what percentage of block heaters contain the defect. We will be notifying 75,115 owners in the U.S. and 19,109 in Canada.

Volvo has found that the block heater contact surface may not match correctly with the engine block as intended. In extreme circumstances the block
heater may come loose from the engine block, and may possibly overheat if being used. This may cause damage if it comes in contact with other engine
compartment components.

All potentially affected components will be recalled, and the bolts used to secure the heater will be replaced. In a small amount of cases the surface
tolerances may be inappropriate requiring the heater be replaced with a modified design.

B. Identification of the Recalled Parts

Engine block heater accessory kits, Part Numbers 9134596-8 and 3542905-9 for the non-turbo engine; Part numbers 9134643-7 and 9124945-8 for the
turbo engine.

The accessories have been offered for sale since September 1992 and apply only to 850 Series vehicles.

D. Retailer Vehicle Campaign List

A "Retailer Vehicle Campaign List" will not be sent to retailers as there are no records to indicate which vehicles had the engine block heater installed as
an accessory.

F. Parts Ordering

There will be an initial allocation proportional to retail purchases, of Service Kit P/N 9184714-5 and plastic sealer P/N 1161401-3 starting on or about
the week of October 21, 1996. This one time allocation of kits will be shipped only to retailers who we have determined to have purchased or sold these
units. After this one time allocation you may order additional quantities using normal ordering procedures. The replacement engine block heaters can
only be ordered by faxing your order to Volvo Retailer Support as needed (201-784-4551 - U.S.A. and 416-493-8754 - Canada). It is estimated that less
than 4% of all vehicles inspected will require replacement of the block heater, therefore limited quantities are available and cannot be stocked. Please
make every effort to minimize customer inconvenience if block heater replacement is required.

Important

Please coordinate parts ordering with the service department's appointments relative to this recall.

G. Owner Notification

An announcement letter will be sent directly by Volvo to 75, 115 owners in the U.S. and 19, 109 in Canada, beginning on or about the week of October
28, 1996. An appointment should not be scheduled unless service kit P/N 9184714-5 is in stock.
