Air Bypass Valve: Testing and Inspection

Turbo Chargers

1.

Only vehicles equipped with a Garrett turbo charger incorporate a delay valve. Check that the red side of the delay valve is facing the intake
manifold.

2.

Disconnect the hose leading from the by-pass valve to the intake manifold. Check for cracks, aging, oil saturation or internal restriction of hose.
Replace as needed.

3.

Reconnect hose at by-pass valve only.

4.

Connect a vacuum pump (Volvo tool #5843 or equivalent) to the intake manifold side of the hose.

5.

Apply vacuum (approx. 22 kPa / 3.2 psi) and check that valve diaphragm holds vacuum. On Mitsubishi turbo chargers, check (through holes
housing) that valve rod moves when applying vacuum.
If valve fails the test, replace and retest with new valve.

6.

Disconnect vacuum pump and reconnect hose.
