Wastegate: Adjustments

Adjusting Boost Pressure (Wastegate Valve Linkage Rod)

1.

Remove seal and retaining clip from wastegate valve. 

2.

Loosen lock nut and remove link rod from wastegate valve.

3.

Adjust the valve as follows using one of the two procedures:

a. MINOR BOOST PRESSURE ADJUSTMENT

Use when boost pressure is known and only minor adjustment is needed.

aa. One full turn of the sleeve will change the pressure by;

About: 3 kPa (0.5 psi)

Turn the rod sleeve inward (overall rod length shortens) to increase boost pressure. 
Turn the rod sleeve outward (overall rod length increases) to lower boost pressure. Be sure not to turn the diaphragm rod, or damage to
diaphragm may occur.

b. BASIC BOOST PRESSURE ADJUSTMENT

Use when repairs have been performed or major adjustment is needed.

ba. Disconnect pressure hose from diaphragm valve.
bb. Connect pressure gauge (Volvo part #5230 or equivalent) and pump to diaphragm.
bc. Apply pressure to;

About: 51 kPa (7.3 psi)

bd. Push wastegate lever to the closed position.
be. Adjust the rod, so it fits exactly over the wastegate lever. Reconnect rod to lever.
bf.

Release pressure from pump and disconnect it.

bg. Reconnect pressure hose.

4.

Fit a new retaining clip and tighten lock nut.

5.

Recheck turbo boost pressure, refer to TURBO BOOST PRESSURE TEST under TURBO CHARGER. Readjust wastegate valve if necessary.
