Impact Sensor: Description and Operation

The sensor module also functions as a diagnostic unit. The sensor
module incorporates piezoelectric sensor elements to detect deceleration,
microprocessors, a memory function which retains information even after the
power supply has failed and a standby power supply. To ensure proper operation
of the sensor module, it is essential the device be properly secured to the
floor. Otherwise the device will record only its own deceleration rather than
the value measured from the moment of impact. The device is grounded through
a terminal connected to one of its mounting screws. It is essential that there
is good contact to the floor panel. The air bag system is monitored continuously
by a microprocessor in the sensor module.

The sensor module also contains a back-up power supply which
stores sufficient energy to operate system even if the battery fails. This
may occur, for example, if a lead is pinched or if the battery is damaged
in a collision. Energy is stored only for about a second after the power supply
has failed and is sufficient to trigger the gas generator in the event of
a collision.
