Steering Gear: Service and Repair
Disassembly/Assembly

Disassembly

1. Remove steering gear assembly from vehicle.
2. Remove and cap power steering gear lines.
3. Place fixture 5046 on to steering gear, then place assembly into a suitable vise.
4. Drain fluid from steering gear assembly.
5. Visually check inner and outer ball joints for wear and/or damage.
6. Remove clamps from bellows. Wipe clean grease from shaft.
7. Disconnect steering rods from rack as follows:

a. On late type assemblies, use suitable pliers to remove steering rods from rack.
b. On early type assemblies, use a 32 mm open end wrench to remove steering rods rack.
c. On all assemblies, prevent rack assembly from moving with an adjustable spanner wrench. Install spanner wrench on to outermost flats.
d. Disconnect left steering rod completely, then loosen right side and leave connected to rack assembly.

8. Remove lock sleeve locking wire from right side.
9. Using compressed air, blow air through outer tube connector to free lock sleeve and brushing.

10. Remove steering rod.
11. Remove lock sleeve, plastic ring and bushing.
12. Remove pretension cover, adjusting shims, gasket, spring and piston assembly.
13. Remove dust cover and pinion lock ring.
14. Remove pinion cover.
15. Secure shaft with socket tool No. 5179, or equivalent, then remove pinion nut.
16. Gently remove pinion and spool valve assembly. If necessary, gently tap lower portion of pinion using a brass drift and hammer to remove

assembly.

17. Remove rack assembly.
18. Release lock ring, then remove pinion lower bearing.
19. Remove lower seal and guide sleeve.
20. Remove rack seal and spacer from tube housing.
21. Remove piston seal. Replace piston seal only if seal is damaged or vehicle has been driven 25,000 miles or more.
22. Remove socket tool No. 5179, or equivalent, dust cover, locking ring, seal and ball bearing.
23. Remove four Teflon rings from spool valve.
24. Clean and check all parts for excessive wear and/or damage. Replace all seals. If pinion or spool valve is damaged, replace complete assembly.

Replace rack bearing and pinion guide sleeve. Check bellows and replace, if necessary.

Assembly

1. Lubricate all components as necessary.
2. Install O-ring, then Teflon ring. If Teflon ring is difficult to install, heat ring to approximately 100-120 degrees F.
3. Place guide sleeve and seal into housing.
4. Install lower ball bearing.
5. Install seal and spacer onto rack.
6. Install the following:

a. Install seal, with lip facing piston seal.
b. Install tapered spacer, with tapered side facing seal.
c. Install flat spacer.

7. Press the two spacers together.
8. Coat rack teeth with suitable lubricant.
9. Install rack, seals and spacers as follows:

a. With rack teeth facing upward, carefully insert rack into housing. Avoid scratching inner surface.
b. When rack seats, push it further inward until lock seal and spacers are in correct position.
c. Carefully tap rack end with a plastic mallet.

10. Check seal seating as follows:

a. On early type gear assemblies, place an old lock sleeve without seal and O-ring into position. Measure distance between rack end and cage.

Distance should be .351 inch. If not seal is incorrectly seated.

b. On late type gear assemblies, look through pressure tube opening and check that at least half of piston seal retainer has passed the center of the

opening.

11. Push back on rack assembly so that rack end is approximately .8 inch from housing. Do not push rack further into housing or seals may be

damaged.

12. Install bushing and plastic spacer as follows:

a. Clean rack end with wet abrasive (sand) paper. Remove all dirt, then wrap suitable adhesive tape around edge.
b. Lubricate all components.
c. Install bushing seal facing outward.
d. Use a small screwdriver to lift edge of seal over end of rack assembly.
e. Install plastic spacer with bevelled side facing inward, then remove tape.
